CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE
The word Independence in the real sense of it means to be free of every exertive forces ,that is to say to have liberty to do whatever one wishes but could this be said to be feasible and realistic in actual sense? Can one be free of others and be able to operate alone? To me I would say that absolute independence is a mirage.
Nigeria was under the British rule for decades and got her independence thereof on the 1st of October 1960,which was facilitated by the combined effort of chief Anthony enahoro , chief onafemi Awolowo, dr Nnamdi azikiwe and likes which started their agitation in 1956 in what was a propagated movement of the great harberty macauley in the early ninety twenty ultimately putting paid to bristish rule in 1960
Should there be a reason to celebrate in independence? Of course we should acknowledge and embrace the courageous act of the past nationalist heroes who fought tirelessly for our sovereignty however celebrating independence today after 58years means we have severed all ties from the British system and exerted ourselves a self reliance and self dependent nation but is this the case ? When after several years our system of governance is just a mirror image of the British rule , our culture and indigenous attributes spiralling down as time passes. This is however not to set a blame but to make a conscious call to us all and especially our leaders that in every act Is a corresponding impact.
It is not to late for us as a nation to act and fashion out a system of governance that will fit into the lifestyle of our people and promote unification of all.
The humble writer here is a young undergraduate that has writing according to excerpts and documents she could lay her hands regarding history of her own country.
A bitter to the government to return the study of history to the syllabus until then do we younger generations understand the pitfall of the time back and prepare ourselves to lead in a better direction.
Wishing everyone happy independence celebration long live Nigeria.
